| | | Hoverfly, Is this Eupeodes lunigar?
I suspect this is Eupeodes luniger. A bit darker than I have seen before. Feeding on honeydew. I would really like to confirm. If this is correct then I am making some progress....... I was able to name it as soon as I saw it. As we all know Hoverflies can be so confusing, at least they are to me. |

Just keep a careful eye on the shape of the shapes, there's another which is similar, Scaeva selenitica which has more horizontal spots.

| | | Re: Hoverfly, Is this Eupeodes lunigar? That's a book I should have, but I've been looking and learning for 4-5 years now. It takes a long time to log all those different flies in your mind, apart from the finer details!

The striking difference between Scaeva pyrastri and S. selenitica for me though is the colour of the markings - a nice yellow as opposed to the whitishness in pyrastri, and should hit you first.
Take care, Jason |

Take care, Jason | Beware of colour, that can vary according to newness or age of the fly, or just plain vary as some do! The shapes are the thing to go on.
