I suspect this is Eupeodes luniger. A bit darker than I have seen before. Feeding on honeydew. I would really like to confirm. If this is correct then I am making some progress....... I was able to name it as soon as I saw it. As we all know Hoverflies can be so confusing, at least they are to me. |

Keep trying, this is one you might not forget now!
Just keep a careful eye on the shape of the shapes, there's another which is similar, Scaeva selenitica which has more horizontal spots.

That's a book I should have, but I've been looking and learning for 4-5 years now. It takes a long time to log all those different flies in your mind, apart from the finer details!
