| | | Re: Cricket or grasshopper? It's a grasshopper. Crickets have much longer antenna, usually at least half the size of the body length. It's the best way to tell them apart. Hope that helps! |

How do you know it is a female? | In Meadow Grasshoppers it's not too tricky as the female usually has very short, stubby wings covering just a small portion of the abdomen, as you can see in your picture. The males are fully-winged and the tips may extend beyond the end of the abdomen.

The first is actually a Common Green Grasshopper, probably a female. You're spot on with the second though!
The nymphs of all the species have short, stubby wings which can make things confusing, but if you find a 'full-sized' grasshopper with short wings chances are it will be a female Meadow Grasshopper.
Out of interest, here's a shot of a male Meadow Grasshopper from the Gallery by welsh.lensman showing the longer wings.
