| | What is this insect? While on a day out to LLangollen in N Wales I saw a most spectacular insect which I've been unable to identify. It was about 2 inches long, black and yellow, with wings folded back along it's back. It had a black ovipositor about 1 inch long and it's legs were yellow. The only illustration I've been able to find that is anything like it was of Rhyssa persuasoria ( Persuasive Burglar!) but that was black and white and mine was definitely yellow on its abdomen.
Can anyone out there help me to identify it. I think my husband has a photo but I haven't seen it yet.
Many thanks. dragon lady. |

| | | Re: What is this insect? Afternoon DL,
Yes, it could be another Ichneumon Wasp, but I'd like to see the hotograph you mention before commiting! The yellow on the abdomen could be the stretched membrane whilst it's carrying eggs ( technically this state is 'gravid'), and not so much a deliberate colour - I've seen it myself.
Take care, Jason |

Many thanks for your quick reply to my query. I now have the photo of the insect we saw but I haven't worked out how to post it on this site for you to see. If you can help me with this I'll let you have it.
Cheers

I've uploaded the pic. I presume you'll know how to find it. I labelled it unidentified bug if that's any help!! Sorry, but I'm new to this.
I'm out all day but will check for your reply this evening.
Thanks again.

Your photo:
...looks like a Giant Wood Wasp, Urocerus gigas.
These aren't actually true wasps, and the thing that looks like a sting is actually an ovipositor for laying eggs. |

| | Re: What is this insect? Hi Roy and Jason,
Many thanks for your help in identifying my 'bug'. I've looked on the insect identifier page now I know what to look for and there are a couple more pics. Is it possible to change the title of my pic to the correct name?
Thanks again for your help. This is a truly fantastic site!!
