| | | Wasp spider sitings I have just seen at a least a dozen adult wasp spiders in a 100m stretch of grass in North East Essex. A number of them had captured grasshoppers which had been rapidly bitten and wrapped in thread. I was interested to note that each adult in its web was in a micro-clearing of grass as if it had deliberately created its own personal space, but I couldn't work out how it was done. Does anyone have any ideas about this?

| | | Re: Wasp spider sitings Yes, they usually seem to be in depressions in the grass, although like you I'm not sure how it comes about, it can be a good way of finding them though! It could be that they choose to build webs in areas where the grass has been flattened, or perhaps they hold the blades back with silk lines to form their own clearing, I'd be interested to hear how it happens.
It does put their webs at the perfect height for catching grasshoppers moving between stems, which must be an advantage!

| | | Re: Wasp spider sitings Yes I thought it might be thin threads too. Each one had a perfect clearing of about the same size though I didn't notice any threads. They might have been there, as the grasses appeared to be held back. That's pretty amazing though.

| | | Re: Wasp spider sitings Ive found quite a few recently and they all seem to be in or on the edge of grass flatterned by people or animals or in the natural gaps between rushes and other plants | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
