Mystery flying insect

Hey there everyone ive just joined up and 1 of the main reasons was due to the insect who visited my garden yesterday. While outside yesterday afternoon an insect which i rekon was 6cm long easily flew through my back garden it was black with a flash of orange arond its waist it had a rather large sting (which i am secretly hoping was actually 4 layin eggs) i thought it looked like a hornet of some sort however it looked as though it belonged in the prehistoric ages! I hop that some one will know what it was. Sadly it was to quick to get a photo i do believe if i seen a photo of it i could identify it. I hope you can help me. Thanks in antisipation.
