Not a very good photo, I'm afraid, I snatched this quick one before it flew off ... can anybody tell me which species of wasp this is?   |

Dolichovespula media worker, they have a '7' on the shoulder.

Janet,
That is a great id tip about the 7 on the shoulder.
I had one of these in the garden a few weeks ago and wasn't sure exactly what it was. I hadn't got a very good picture of it either but after a bit of research in my books and the internet I came to the conclusion that it was probably a median wasp.
I have just checked back on the photos I took and sure enough there is the 7
