Does anyone know what this is?
This insect landed on the side wall of our house (Northern Ireland) on Sunday 8th August 2010. It was approx. 5cm in length including the pointed sting/tail. It was heavy in flight with a definite drone noise.
I have attached a picture which was taken from 7ft below with a 200mm lens.

I hope someone can help identify it.

It's a Horntail, female, with ovipositor. One of my favourite insects, harmless!

Thank you. I wasn't sure if I would photograph it or put a lead on it and take it for a walk! Really appreciate the quick reply.
