| | Unusual wasp? (no pic) Hello my good friends I am new here and I have joined wild about britain because I have found this very unusual wasp it has yellow/orange legs black body and a pair of teardrop wings two very long antennas and its body has the thinnest joint I have ever seen and it is really unusual and it also has a very long stinger the size of 0.8 cm the insect its self was probably 1-1.5 inchs and its a bit thing the body looks shell plated the reason we have no pictures is because my mum got scared of the thing and decided to wash it down the sink

| | | Re: Unusual wasp? (no pic) Morning Mr. Snakes, and welcome to WAB!
It sounds like a female Ichneumon Wasp, the ' stinger' being an ovipositor - an egg-laying tube. With some 2,000 species in the UK, photos or descriptions aren't enough unfortunately.
Take care, Jason |

| | | Re: Unusual wasp? (no pic) Thanks Hamza,
For other's reference:
The ' waist' is typical Hymenopteran - probably Vespoidea superfamily.
Have a look through here: Gallery, particularly those sub-headed Vespidae
What part of the UK was this in? |
