| | | Anyone know what this is? Hi,
Can anybody help with this please?
Was sitting in my car today, window open, when I became aware of a really low pitched droning noise next to my head. Turned around to see what it was, and it was the BIGGEST insect I have seen, ever! It had landed on the inside of the roof of my car in the back and it was as long and as wide as my thumb, no exaggeration! It looked like a very large wasp or bee, although not as brightly coloured. The colours were more muted, black and brownish striped rather than your typical black and yellow colours. Definitely not a hornet, have seen plenty of them. I don't think it's body was jointed like a wasp either. It didn't buzz as such, just droned. Also had a massive pointy bit on it's behind, but didn't dare get too close to it to check if it was a sting or not!
I've been looking on tinternet for hours now trying to find out what it was, but haven't had any luck. It's bugging (no pun intended! ) the hell out of me. Really wish I'd tried to catch it now so I could have a proper look at it. At the time though, I just leapt out of the car and slammed the door on it (forgetting window was open! lol). It bumped around for a bit in the car then flew out of the window.
Has anyone else seen one of these and knows what it is? Tried explaining it to my dad who's pretty good with anything nature wise and the only thing he could think of was something they used to call Jaspers when he was a kid, although he's not sure that's the correct name for them. Apparently they were common down in the mines? |
