Volucella zonaria hoverfly?
This giganting beauty greeted me this morning when I popped outside before going to work. After being briefly fooled into believing it was a hornet (I would have been equally impressed, as I have never seen one live) called all my family out to keep an eye while I went in to catch my camera. She patiently sat for me, and when it moved to the wall, made an impressive hum.
ID confirmation would be great given that according to the NBN gateway, it is quite rare in the north of England.
