When ants attack

Looking for something to photograph today I saw a small moth on the flower bed. As I got closer to take the picture an ant got hold of the moth and prevented it from flying off. Further ants joined in and helped kill the moth and then dragged it down into the nest. It was the first time I've observed this behaviour close up and I was astounded at the ability of one small ant to hang onto a moth so much larger than itself. I did contemplate rescuing the moth but the lure of observing and picturing this natural behaviour was too much for me.

Evening Mike,

Fascinating - I've never seen a Lasius sp. actively hunting - they seem to be only interested in aphids! I wonder if it has anything to do with the upcoming 'Flying Ant Day's?
