strange insect in garden
Can anyone help identify a strange insect seen several times recently, as my wife and i have no idea what it is.Its about an inch long like a large hoverfly, orange and brown in colour. large compound eyes,one set of wings looks similar to a bee but with a longer body and such a strange colour.It seems to be hanging around with the hoverflies but have only seen it at rest.We live on the south coast ANY IDEAS? thanks jeff

Evening Jeff, and welcome to WAB!

Look up both Volucella zonaria, and Volucella inanis - both large hoverflies (in fact the first is the biggest fly in the UK), and very noticeable!
