| | | 2 x Nowickia ferox, but what's the fly in the middle? Hi, I took this photo on Monday (02/08/10) near Basingstoke of the Nowickia but got this other one too. It seems to have reddish patches on it's sides. Any clues?
Thanks, Jo
ooops, forgot to upload the photo, hang on a mo...

I'll be presumptious - Eriothrix rufomaculata.
Take care, Jason |

So... Were you right?
P.S. I am assuming it is N. ferox as it has black legs but I am used to being wrong!

| | | Re: 2 x Nowickia ferox, but what's the fly in the middle? Yes, I was correct! I find Tachina fera in close proximity to E. rufomaculata quite often, and the red sides are frequently commented on/forms a distinctive part of their appearance so it was quite likely according to my own experience. I've never seen N. ferox, but given the similarity to fera I assume they occupy the same ecological niches and in some respects could be interchangeable.
Matt's the one to confirm ferox, but it looks good.
You're too modest, though |

| | | Re: 2 x Nowickia ferox, but what's the fly in the middle? Do you do this for a living or are you just a very knowledgeable hobbyist? It must take one Hell of a lot of studying to know as much as you about insects!
Thanks (I knew you'd be right; very impressive ), Jo

| | | Re: 2 x Nowickia ferox, but what's the fly in the middle? The Nowicka record you had on 24/07 from Basingstoke is ok - we have a nice clear photo of that - here he is:
This lot are slightly more tricky,as the bits we need to see are slightly fuzzy.
The red and black fly in the middle is Eriothrix rufomaculata - thats the easy one.
The one at the top looks pretty good for Nowickia to start with, but I think that is due to the angle of the fly on the flower. The antennae are definately brown, which make this Tachina fera - this has brown antennae while Nowickia has all black antennae. The photo is a tad too fuzzy to confirm the colour of the legs.
The one on the lower left is again, I am pretty, Tachina fera. T.fera has some dusting on the abdomen that gives those "gold shimmer spots" at certain angles which you don't see in Nowickia, plus there is a hint of brown on the legs. T.fera has the femur black, but the tibia and tarsus are brown, and I think I see brown looking ends to the legs here. Nowickia has all black legs as you can see from your first photo. | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
