Apologies for the poor pic, but it insisted on sitting up on my neighbours conservatory roof, and I had to stand on a chair, on tip toes with full zoom on. Not easy!!  |

No doubt it's one of our more spectacular hoverflies. The bad light doesn't help, but I think it is Volucella inanis rather than V. zonaria. |

Afternoon Mark,
It's Volucella zonaria - note the varying abdominal band colouration, all-chestnut thorax and lack of a black smudge on the mid-wing as you find in inanis.
Stunning indeed - I was ' buzzed' by one - twice - yesterday, and the sound as they fly is quite incredible.
