It's a male Tabanus species - a Horsefly.

HI Jason,
Thank you for the welcome and the advice.
A bit strange though. Having cows in the field next door we get quite of lot of flies that I thought were horseflies, greenish in colour, slim, with a very pointy probiscus and a damn painful bite. Bigger than your average fly but no where near as big as this one. Are there diferent types of horsefly? |

My book mentions 28 species in the UK ( though it's wort mentioning photographs may not be sufficient in identifying all of them). |

I have now consulted google and learnt that there are lots of different kinds of horseflies. This one looks like Tabanus bovinus. Every day is school day!
I was trying to find out what type the green ones are but it seems there are many. Somewhat confusingly there is one in the Gallery here labelled Tabanus bovinus that looks like the green ones we normally see but nothing like the one that I photographed which has yellow and black stripes. | | |
