Could someone tell me what this is please, it was on the leaves of a white poplar sucker along with many other insects. Is it a predator?   
Any general info you could tell me about it would be great too

To my jaded eyes, Sarah it looks like some sort of Ichneumon wasp, but there are others here with greater knowledge. However this might help you a little : Ichneumonoidea - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Although HELP may be a totally inappropriate word when applied to this suborder.

The extra small shape of venation near the wing bottom suggests Ichneumon, what it is I don't know. Very pretty!

Yes, it's an Ichneumon wasp. As for species, it's a microscope/specimen/expert thing I'm afraid!
