| | | World's oldest species In The Independent today (30/07) there is a report that two colonies of the tadpole shrimp, Triops cancriformis, have been discovered near Caerlaverock. T.cancriformis has existed unchanged for >200 million years.
Can anyone put up a link? I am computer illiterate . . .

| | | Re: World's oldest species I liked the following comment to the article:
"That's not the 'oldest pedigree'. They just haven't been subjected to evolutionary pressure of any kind in a while.
We all have a pedigree of 4bn years, or thereabouts..."
ISTRC that they also live in temporary pools on the Lulworth tank ranges in Dorset.

| | | Re: World's oldest species Jim - you are of course correct. Every species living today can in principle trace its ancestry back to the first appearance of life on Earth, at least 3.7 billion YBP. I just thought it might be of interest that a species which has existed unchanged for 200 million years is alive and well and living in Scotland. They are also known as Rangers fans . . .
I wonder what the wee shrimpies wear under their kilts?
