| | | Southern emerald in Essex! A bit of exciting news (for me anyway). Those who went Thursley may have heard me mention my odd looking emerald damselfly I found a Wat Tyler Country Park last Thursday:
Well looking on BDS (british dragonfly society) website (as Ive managed to loose my dragonfly book!) and it didn't match the emerald or scarce emerald (which I was familar with as they are both present at Wat Tyler). I checked the willow emerald, but was disappointed when it didnt match, but got rather excited when comparing it to the features of a Southern!
I sent of this pic and the others to the county recorder and he has confirmed that it is (as far as he knows) the first Essex record for the species
Ive submitted a record to the BDS and I'm awaiting a reply and
there are more photos on my blog too. |

| | | Re: Southern emerald in Essex! Congrats on this superb find! Your photo certainly shows all the distinctive field marks- not one I've seen in the UK but on the continent.
This must be one of the most exciting years ever for Odonata migrants- with Kent + Essex getting the rich pickings. |

It may not be too long before these start to become more widespread (along with others like Southern Migrant Hawker, several of which are currently present nearby at Hadleigh Country Park). |

| | | Re: Southern emerald in Essex! Thanks guys. John Dobson of Dragonflies of Essex book fame popped by today to have a look. Not sure how he got on as I missed him in my lunch break after a brief chat when I was working.
With the southern migrant hawkers up the coast at Hadleigh and across the Thames at Cliff (where Southern Emeralds are too) Im inspecting any hawker I see closely! |

Richard | Thank Richard, There have been at least 4 people that have come for a look (including the Essex recorder).
And speaking to the RSPB the other day it turns out the the Southern Migrant Hawkers were present on the Vange Wick marshland the other side of Timbermans creek! | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
