Seen at Hilsea Lines, Portsmouth. this fly has got to be the largest I have seen in the UK.

I saw the same one today. Look out for Volucella zonaria - that's bigger still!

...that's where I saw my first inanis. Yesterday I saw both Xylota segnis and V. inanis (possibly two) on a Buddleia bush that I'll be examining again. |

Thanks to you both . I shall have to look out for the Hornet hoverfly. My personal count of hoverfly species has taken off (oops) this year. Maybe I have my eyes open wider  .
