Cool Giant Wood wasp
Thornley Woods Gateshead NE England, saw a huge inch and half long wasp like creature with huge stinger/ovipositor - could it have been a Giant Wood Wasp???

Every chance, that's a good description of one, it is an ovipositor (not a stinger) and harmless. Impressive though.
