| | | Is this a Tree Wasp - Dolichovespula sylvestris? Hi. I found a wasps nest today while I was out walking on my local heath in Dorset. I took a short video and this is one frame from the video which shows one of the wasps coming out of the nest (which was in a hole in a sandy bank)

| | | Re: Is this a Tree Wasp - Dolichovespula sylvestris? I was hoping some one could help me with an ID from the face markings.
I can see a small black dot in the centre of the face - and looking at my ID book, this seems to be very similar to the tree wasp.
Many thanks. Jane |

| | | Re: Is this a Tree Wasp - Dolichovespula sylvestris? Hi Jane,
From what I can see it looks like Dolichovespula sylvestris, I have a nest in my hedge!
I get pics of them occasionally, yesterday I got one resting on a Hydrangea floret, a worker and it was a good inch long! Looking again I think it must be a queen.
Maybe I can upload my pics...
Janet

Here is my "in/out" video... of the nest entrance in a sandy bank. By the way I slowed the video down 2x as they were SO quick! "Tree" Wasp Nest ... gone to ground! on Flickr - Photo Sharing!

| | | Re: Is this a Tree Wasp - Dolichovespula sylvestris? That's great Jane!
I don't find them aggressive either, I was stood with them coming in to the nest going past my head. They are very busy!
