Black Large Marsh Grasshopper

Hi all,

Heres something you dont see everyday

Found this Large Marsh Grasshopper while out in the New Forest at the weekend, ive read they come in a purple colour variation but havent found any mention of a black one





For those that dont know the Large Marsh it usually looks like this;

Hi Keith,
Your photo shows a female Large Marsh Grasshopper, which do tend to be darker and duller than the males. However, I've never seen an individual showing as much black as yours, it's certainly a very attractive form! Great shots too.

Hopefully these two photos will be of interest, the first is of a pink female and the second is a fairly typical brown female (dwarfing a male Meadow Grasshopper!)

I did actually see one as dark as yours in Dorset a few weeks back,which had me looking twice .

Did a walk from there round the Inclosure last saturday. Looked round the bog before hand on my own & found a clump of 7 Bog Orchids.

The day was made up however by finding a colony of small red eyed damsels
