Wasp Identification ?

Hi,

I was getting into my car earlier and nearly jumped out of my skin when i saw this wasp (at least i think it is a wasp?) near my gear stick. Not quite sure how it got there, but intrigued as to what species it is due to the size of the thing !

I cupped it, took a few photo's and let it go, it seemed tame enough, didnt want to fly away initially, but up and left when it got bored of me taking pictures.

I have had a look on the web but cant find anything similar, the spike ("excuse my obvious lack of knowledge on the subject") on the rear of it was very long, probably 2cm and was hard and quite thick.

Anyway, thanks in advance for your help, I hope you can tell me what it is.

It's the Giant Woodwasp, Urocerus gigas in scientific terms. Huge thing, and one I have yet to seek-out. Are you North of the country?

Thank you very much for your prompt and accurate reply ! I have just googled that and you are indeed correct. This thing was massive like you say ! I was almost sad to see it fly away i felt quite privileged :-)

I am in Coventry, the midlands. I do live close to open country (yes there is green stuff in coventry ;-) ), and in close proximity to a small wooded/pond area.
