| | | Bug ID's please Hello, sorry you've got me hooked spent any spare time out in the garden photographing bugs, managed to identify most, but these 3 not sure of.
1 I think is a young leaf hopper?
2 & 3. I thought was some sort of shield bug, but the closest I could find was in the Miridae family Deraocoris Flavilinea?
4. No idea!
Many thanks

| | | Re: Bug ID's please Hi Jane - I'm no expert around here, but from my own limited experience, I would suggest the following:
1. Some sort of leaf hopper (or young one, as you said)
2 & 3. Definitely looks like a mirid, possibly Deraeocoris ruber?
4. Looks like a dung fly, possibly Scathophaga stercoraria?
I'm sure others with far more experience than I will be along to put me right on those suggestions!
Oh, and welcome to the "I'm hooked on photographing insects" Club! |

| | | Re: Bug ID's please Afternoon Jane,
The first is an adult Leafhopper from the Empoasca genus, but I doubt you'd get to species-level from the photo - you need a side-on, so do post any others if you got some! The next is Deraeocoris ruber like Jez says, then probably Tetanocera sp. as Janet named.
Take care, Jason |

| | | Re: Bug ID's please The Empoasca is almost certainly decipiens - should be able to see the clear streak from this angle in vitis.
Of course, there's always pteridis to consider, which is virtually identical to decipiens. It's meant to be very rare, but let's face it - how many people bother to check..? | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
