| | | Hoverfly help please! I photographed this one earlier today in my back garden ... eventually! It flew relentlessly around and aroud my flowers, only ever stopping occasionally for a couple of seconds before flying off again. Sometimes when it DID land for a few seconds, its wings were still going while it was motionless! I think this could be Scaeva pyrastri - does anyone agree/disagree? |

Yes, I agree - Scaeva pyrastri, one I haven't seen yet! As for the wing movement during rest, I believe they do this to keep their wing temperature at one to sustain flight - was it cool/overcast?
Take care, Jason |

Thanks for the confirmation, Jason - I've seen a few before, and they are fairly distinctive, pattern-wise. As soon as I saw it flitting around me, I had an idea it was S.pyrastri, but the little blighter wouldn't stay still long enough to confirm!
Weather conditions were warm, a lot of cloud (we had had a heavy downpour earlier in the day) but also some warm sunny intervals. I had seen one earlier in the day, with all the same behavioural patterns, but couldn't get a shot before it disappeared, and then this one (whether or not it was the same one, I don't know) suddenly appeared as I was watching the B.rupestris I posted earler! | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
