| | | A couple of flies... Evening folks. I've tried to id these but I'm not good at flies, or anything else for that matter! They were both spotted today in Basingstoke in our school grounds. the first 2 are the same critter.
Thanks, Jo

I'm not too sure what family the first belongs to ( Lauxaniidae?), but the second could be an Anthomyia sp. - neither may be photo-jobs.
Take care, Jason |

| | | Re: A couple of flies... Certainly is! Maybe someone else can, or at least to an aggregate of species. |

| | | Re: A couple of flies... Quite true! I think there's a yellow Muscidae member that was determined to species-level by John Coldwell (Oxycera) recently. If I'm right that this one is a Laux then there could be several.
Size and habitat often help.

| | | Re: A couple of flies... Size-wise, the yellow one was small, about 5mm (pushed my camera to it's limit focussing!) and the black one a bit bigger probably 8-10mm. They were both in our school wild garden in North Hants which along with a wild flower meadow area has mature privet, elder and sycamore and semi-mature hawthorn, blackthorn and guelder rose. There are several birds nesting incl. wrens, wood pigeon, robins and blackbirds and at least 3 separate bumble nests. Hope this info helps someone!
