| | | Fly for id please I spotted this in my garden in North Wiltshire yesterday. At first sight I thought it was a wasp, but on closer inspection I think it is a fly. Can anyone help with an id please?
It's about 1 cm long and there are yellow marks on the face between the eyes.

| | | Re: Fly for id please Evening Judith,
It's a female Hoverfly, Chrysotoxum bicinctum.
Take care, Jason |

| | | Re: Fly for id please Evening Jason-that was quick!
Thanks for the id-my book has a pic of C. cautum but not C. bicinctum. I'm not conscious that I have noticed this species before-along with heaps of other flying things in the garden.

| | | Re: Fly for id please Pleasure! Not all books feature all species - was this something along the lines of Collin's Complete British Insects or something? Try Stubbs and Falk's British Hoverflies: An Illustrated Identification Guide for these. C. bicinctum is one I have yet to see - looking forward to the time! |

| | | Re: Fly for id please Thanks for the book recommendation-duly noted. I was referring to Insects of Britain and Europe by M.Chinery-it has a description of C. bicinctum which a truly determined detective would probably have been able to make an id from. Must lack a little grit!
I spotted this specimen in a bush above a patch of Campanula portenschlagiana, a plant I have been battling to keep under control, but after studying the number of bees attracted to it this year, I have decided to let it run further. Hoverflies seem to be visiting too.
