| | | White Earwig Hey, i found a white earwig. Are they born white and then change colour or could this be an albino one? |

| | | Re: White Earwig I have seen a whole family of young ones under a pot with the mother watching over them, she cares for them until they are big enough to look after themselves.
Yes they start off white. They seem to be breeding well in this good summer!

| | | Re: White Earwig It could also have just moulted, it dosn't take long for them to darken after the moult.
I don't believe there is such a thing as an Albino insect... |

I don't believe there is such a thing as an Albino insect... | Yes, many (most?) insects are pale or colourless immediately after eclosure.
You're right: an albino insect would probably be a dead one because the darkening of the exoskeleton is part of the same chemical process that hardens the 'skin' and makes it waterproof. |

| | | Re: White Earwig An afterthought - there are a group of insects and other animals which are colourless/white: those which live in caves with a permanent stable temperature and moisture.
The closest most of us are likely to see it the 'ant woodlouse' Platyarthus hoffmannseggi whiich is sommonly found (at least in London) in nests of black garden ants. | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
