Would any of the hoverfly enthusiasts care to cast their eyes over these pictures for comment?
Four seperate individuals from South Devon, 3 at flowers of Burnet Saxifrage in a layby of the A38 and 1 on lesser hawkbit, smallhanger clay workings.
I think (from bungling around with Stubbs) that they are Episyrphus balteatus, syrphus ribesii and two individuals of Scaeva pyrastri. All common hoverflies.
However I'm a complete novice and may well have hugely fouled it all up! So opinion welcome.      |

| | | Re: Hoverflies for id confirmation or refutation :) Agreed except for the Syrphus, S. ribesii females have all yellow hind femora or black just at the base at the most. That will have to remain Syrphus sp.

I must confess my ident of the syrphus hinged on what I thought was a completely yellow femur - looking at pic 2 now I can see there is a suggestion of darkness which I took to be shadow - I was hoping the part black femur referred to in Stubbs would be a little more cut and dried than that.
As always I need better pictures
