Fly ID please

This fly found it's way onto my friends shirt yesterday at Wakehurst Place, West Sussex.

Is it a robberfly of some sort?

Yes you are on the correct lines but it will be difficult to get to species level from that photo which lacks fine detail.

Just going by the general outline, Neoitamus species looks possible but these flies are tricky to identify even with a clear photo.

But some of the fly experts may be able to offer a more detailed opinion.

I'd say it's Tolmerus atricapillus, they turn up around now and it looks like one to me.

I am happy to go with just a group ID (though Tolmerus atricapillus certainly does look right)
