| | | Re: Wasp I.d. please The face pattern matches Dolichovespula saxonica. It's one I've had for a few years now.
I think this is a male D. saxonica, the worker female has different abdomen patterns and I think I can count 13 antennal segments as well as 7 abdominal segments.

| | | Re: Wasp I.d. please It also matches D.sylvestris. I think in alot of cases with Dolichovespula males you need microscope examination. |

| | | Re: Wasp I.d. please Morning all,
Sorry Shenk, I know next to nothing about these wasps ( too variable between hierarchical individuals - similar to bees and why I don't really bother with them either) so can't help. What microscopic features would need examining here Dan? I always thought it was just colour patterns!
Take care, Jason |

Take care, Jason | Its genitals. Colour pattern on the abdomen in most species is best avoided as a pure means of ID especially with males when it can be quite variable. |

| | | Re: Wasp I.d. please I've posted this link before, but for those who didn't get it here are two pdf's with pictures of both Vespula and Dolichovespula. They give the faces of the queens, and some key points to look for at the bottom so it can have it's uses to a point.
Go to the section which says Resources on external websites to find the pictorial keys of British social wasps, but as Stuart pointed out they have a pic of the European version of Vespa crabro, ours has a yellow head but the rest is the same.
