It's Volucella pellucens - a Hoverfly from the Syrphidae family.

Yes, I have. Those in the Volucella genus tend to be big-old things - I had one called Volucella bombylans (it mimics bumblebees for protection) today which measures about 14mm long. Others in the same group exceed this and yours, even!

How long was yours, then?
