| | | Any ideas? Typically - out for a walk without a camera. When will I learn?
On a coastal walk in North Antrim (Portballintrae) I was saw, among the bees and butterflies feeding on the flowers in the dunes, quite a few shiny black, wasp-size (or larger) flies with brilliant red wings. When one settled I got a closer look and the wings were actually red and black striped/or large spots. When they flew the wings just looked red. I don't think these were moths. They looked too 'solid' to be moths or butterflies although they did have quite long, curling antennae. I've searched this site and the only image that looks at all like them are froghoppers, but my impression is that froghoppers are very small and these were big insects. I've never come across them before.
Next time I take that route I'll certainly take my camera - but in the meantime I'd be grateful for any ideas/information from more experienced forumers. |
