Whos this big intruder then?

Hi,
Just had this big beast hovering around my 2 year olds bedroom which was a bit scary. Is it some sort of hoverfly? It's about 3cm from wing end to antlers, it's body seems to be as one, black/yellow marking, huge eyes,doesn't looklike it has a sting. Any ideas? I've looked up hornets but doesn't seem to match anything similar.

It's a Horsefly, perhaps one of the Tabanus species. Big things aren't they!

I think it's a horsefly or cleg.

I think you're quite right Jason. I didn't know these beasts come in this size!!!
I've googled it, it looks like a Tabanus sudeticus, not sure though. I caught it in my bug catcher and now have it in a plastic container with air holes with a damp piece of kithchen towel inside.
