| | Wasps nest Hi All
I'm new here, found your excellent site trying to research if I should do anything about a small wasp nest in my birch tree. I was on the lounger this afternoon not 4 feet from it , then I noticed it! Strangely, I have done much work at that end of the garden within a few feet of it (not noticing) & have not been troubled .It is about 30ft from my back door, and 6 ft from my garage door. I do not know if I should leave them alone or not. i am not into obliterating creatures generally, but have read that after the larvae hatch & fly end summer the workers could get restless! I do not want to use poison as I have frodgs newts & toads in my nearby pond, not to mention pets. What the heck should I do please. It is about 4 inches long & has about 4 workers still building it. I have read it can cost £50+ to call out the council & they will use nippon or sumsuch Waspishness in my tiny garden 2 on Flickr - Photo Sharing! |

| | | Re: Wasps nest Hi,
Id suggest that if it has taken you this long to notice them, then they arent too much of a problem. And the nest sounds so unfeasibly (sp?) small i cant believe it will get big enough to pose any kind of "threat" in your garden. At least you know where it is so can keep vibrations and aggressive movements down to a minimum next to the nest.
When they have finished rearing the young, wasps do get annoying as they have lots of free time on their hands so start tea-leafing from your pint glass, licking jam off your scones etc. Whether you get rid of the nest or not, you'll still have wasps knocking about from other nearby nests so why bother getting rid of something that you should really be pleased about having in your garden. I for one try to encourage these wee beasties in to my garden, keeps the pesky caterpillars in check so i can enjoy a savoy that looks like a cabbage and not a mouldy slice of swiss cheese.
Just a point of view.
