| | | Bees in my growbags! I've noticed a largish bee going in and out of one end of a growbag in my greenhouse. It comes in with a 3/4" piece of leaf, neatly rolled. Any ideas what it is? I'll try to take a photo. |

| | | Re: Bees in my growbags! It's one of the Leafcutter Bees - genus Megachile, the leaves will be used to make a series of little pots or cells which will have 1 larvae inside each. They are natural cavity nesters and do seem to like using growbags or flowerpots for nest sites, I've had them in flower pots on several occasions. |

| | | Re: Bees in my growbags! Yes, they don't do any harm to the plants and are usually quite small 'nests'. The only danger is that you might drown them ..... |

| | | Re: Bees in my growbags! Hiya , Yes Leaf cutter Bees are harmless so long as your not Fanatical re your Roses ! they cut semi circles out, to line and seal their egg chambers which are made generally in hollow sticks . you can hang short Bamboo sticks out in a bundle to help them |

| | | Re: Bees in my growbags! We had some nests in pots last year, but din't realise until we'd drowned the poor blighters and emptied the pots...
So this year, we decided to make amends! We made an 'insect hotel', and also bought a solitary bee nest box. This is what we saw on Sunday!!
We also have potter wasps making nests in the insect hotel too, so it's been a good week! |

| | | Re: Bees in my growbags! That's a great sight isn't it. Could I ask if that's the homemade or bought box, and if it's just slabs with drill holes, and if so, how deep the drill holes need to go? Well done you anyway! Dill |

Dill | That's the bought box, from Ecotopia, although there's loads about (this was my favourite aesthetically!) Checked this morning to see if any more nests had been built, and found this female sealing off a third nest! So satisfying.
The homemade one was just cobbled together from stuff we have in the garden. Very rough and ready!! Here's a pic | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
