| | | Giant conifer aphid? Hi
I found this on a blackcurrant bush in the garden.
The size and shape were similar to this Giant Willow Aphid posted by Bruce,
but there are obviously differences in colouring, wing venation etc.
Looking around the web I've found pics of Cinara species of giant conifer aphids with black bodies and red legs but have not found any winged individuals. As the garden meets the edge of a spruce wood on one side, it would not be suprising to find conifer based animals here.
Any thoughts would be appreciated, I was initially baffled by this one as I have never seen the like before.
Steve
BTW check out the lenght of the proboscis in the second pic! |

| | | Re: Giant conifer aphid? I think yours is a Cinara species. Apart from the differences you mention, it also seems to lack the triangular prptouberance in the middle of the abdomen that is characteristic of Tuberolachnus (giant willow aphid). Cinara pilicornis is associated with spruce (that's not an ID)
