| | | ID help I've noticed a strange (to me, anyway) insect hanging around my kitchen window recently. It is black, wasp sized, & was carrying a piece of green leaf (about the same size as the insect). It was hovering at a weep hole on my pvc window frame, something I've seen it doing over the last few days. Sorry, no pics. |

I agree with Aesh, sounds like a Megachile sp., a Leaf-cutting Bee. I can't think of many alternatives...
Take care, Jason |

| | | Re: ID help Thanks to aeshna5 & Jason for your prompt answers. I must say that this has only served to make me more curious, so I've set up the camera & took a few shots. My 7 y.o. son is now fascinated, he has aspergers, ADHD, & is mildly epileptic, but this activity has kept him enthralled today, a GODSEND really! P.S. Sorry, received a message saying 'exceeds filesize limit', can't upload my pics so can't show you my hard work!

| | | Re: ID help leafcutters are very interesting insects , they make their nests in flower pots in my greenhouses, they locate their nest exactly and no matter how many identical flower pots are on the staging they will fly straight to their chosen pot.
It is amusing to see their antics when i turn their chosen flower pot around with the hole they made directly opposite to where it was.
The leafcutter wil fly in, go to where its nest was and when unable to find the hole will float around in a confused state for a short while, sometimes going out of the greenhouse and coming back in and trying again, after five to ten minutes it will work out where it is then re-orientate to the new position, after that its a beeline straight to the hole.
That is when i turn it back to its original position
Ian

| | | Re: ID help I've played the same game with those which nest in my greenhouse. They get really frustrated. Try and see where it is cutting its bits of leaves from, could be rose leaves, snowberry, acer or other shrubs. One decimated a young acer I had in a pot to "lace curtains". So I moved the pot a few yards, but it found it again! They are fairly easy to track, as they don't fly very far away from the chosen hole. Time the arrivals and departures.
