| | | Are these Leptopterna dolabrata in a mating preamble? They were certainly interested in each other and this noma (meadow plant bug) is the nearest I can find in my insect book.
It was fascinating to watch and I got many other images but this seemed to offer the most identification information.
Am I right in thinking the female is bigger as with many invertebrates? The smaller bug was doing all the niceties and 'courtship' protocols.
Macro lenses are great!!! What a wonderful world we live in.

| | | Re: Are these Leptopterna dolabrata in a mating preamble? Evening Acher,
The one on the right is likely a female Leptopterna dolabrata, the one on the left looks like Stenotus binotatus ( slimmer first antennal segment, browner antennae, markless hind femora, more yellow cuneus).
Take care, Jason

| | | Re: Are these Leptopterna dolabrata in a mating preamble? Jason -
Just looked at the back markings on this image and my book (Collins complete british insects)
has the male meadow plant bug looking like this - ie the black patches on what I, as a layman, would call shoulders.

Yes, the one on the left is Stenotus binotatus. Funny, I was talking to Janet (Username: JRsbugs) about the similarities between these two. As differenciation, look at the first antennal segment - it's swollen with dolobrata, and slim with binotatus. The one on the left has narrow ones, so is binotatus.
Still, both these have similar warm tones and markings on the pronotums... |
