I think this little fella is a signal fly?

Please could someone id it for me?

Interesting fly - quick look in Diptera.info suggests Platystomatidae - Rivellia species might be closer.

Oh thank you - I've just googled that and it looks very like it. It was the cutest little thing and hard to photograph as he kept walking around on the leaf!

Evening Merrow,

Good one Brian! We only seem to have one insect from this Genus in the UK as far as I can make out - Rivellia syngenesiae, which also has orange/pale metatarsi so a good back-up character.
