| | | Re: Fly ID's Morning Ben,
The first is possibly a Muscid/Anthomyiid-thing, then the amazing-looking Hoverfly Eristalinus sepulchralis I believe. I'm not sure what the third is! The fourth could be a Fanniid, fifth may be a Calliphorid - any wing-shots? The last is a Dolichopodid but not sure which - bristle-placement helps.
Take care, Jason |

Thanks for the ID's.
'Twas the eyes that made me doubt that #2 was a Hoverfly. I did take it at How Hill, near a very large dung pile!! And, according to Stubbs & Falks, these do favour " decaying vegetation or where cattle trampling and dung has resulted in enrichment"
Sorry, no wing shots of #5. That was the only shot I got of it.
Can you help me with a couple more?
1. If this is a Cranefly, it's the smallest one I've ever seen!! I thought it was a midge, but I'm not sure.

| | | Re: Fly ID's Certainly... I'll have to come back to you on the first, but the second is a Conopidae fly which I think needs keying-out (I think I got a brief key from the web - it should help, but seem to have lost it on my computer!), and the last is possibly a Braconidae, which again needs keying-out for certainty - a very difficult process that I'm not particularly interested in personally.
As for odd Syrphids, look out for Ferdinandea cuprea; I saw one today, stunning...
