What on earth??
My boyfriend has seen a few of these smushed on the pavement and reckons they're pretty big - about 2.5cm long. I don't know much about insects - can anyone ID this weird-looking thing?

It's a cockchafer or may bug, Melolontha melolontha. In other words, it's a flippin' big beetle .

Thanks everybody! I feel a bit silly now, I've obviously heard of them, but I've just never seen one to know I guess. They're pretty weird, like some kind of composite insect!

Wait till you get one flying around the light in your living room! Lovely creatures though, once you can catch it to have a look at it.
