My first hornet

A very large wasp-like creature has just been flying around my bedroom, it was over 2" long so it must have been a hornet. I was going to eject it, but while I went to find a glass to catch it in it must have found its own way out. I was a bit worried in case the cat tried to catch it.

A hornet is possible but also consider a Horntail Sawfly - Urocerus gigas.

The reddish brown colouration on the thorax area of a hornet is usually distinctive while a horntail is more obviously black and yellow.
