| | | Wasp (ichneumon?) for ID I saw this wasp (actually I saw two or three) flying around my small garden meadow, patrolling the tall grass and occasionally landing. I managed to catch one and take some photos, before releasing it again.
It was approx 2cm long with very long antennae.
I know these wasps are notoriously hard to ID, but I thought I'd have a bash and add some photos here - to see if anyone had any ideas.
I thought maybe it was a Amblyteles armatorius (which I saw in the garden last year) but this one had a very distinctive yellow face... last year's one didn't. So I'm not sure...
Let me know what you think. Cheers. Jane Underside From above From side |

| | | Re: Wasp (ichneumon?) for ID Evening Jane,
The first stage of identification involves a good look at the wings, and then on to microscopic features - all this only gets you to sub-family!
That said, I wouldn't really like to try naming it personally. Still, these are real beauties aren't they!
Take care, Jason

| | | Re: Wasp (ichneumon?) for ID Thanks Jason. Looks like it's another "anon" for the book! Great insects though as you say.
