| | | Definately a cantharid beetle 10mm long. I thought this was C.rustica but the cwg website says the fore tibia is black, at least in the basal half - whereas this is all red. C.pellucida & C.nigricans have red foretibiae but with them the thorax is red. C.nigra has all red legs. What do the experts think ? |

| | | Re: Definately a cantharid beetle Am no expert but the keys I have suggest that front tibia red does rule out rustica. If this was >8mm then keys lead to C. nigricans, but it is quite dark for this sp. |

Also the C.nigricans shown on the cwg website has an all red thorax. I don't know whether this is always the case.

| | | Re: Definately a cantharid beetle Seems like C. nigricans and pellucida are variable in this respect and can have an unmarked thorax or a single dark mark |

| | | Re: Definately a cantharid beetle I've found several more of these with identical markings and feel confident that they are C.nigricans. There are lots of photos of it on the internet with similar dark marks on the thorax. Also abdominal sternites 1-4 are black, which distinquishes it from C.pellucida. | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
