burrowing beetle for ID please
2nd year running i have pulled up the faded forget me nots and found these little jewels buried in the soil. absolutely lovely looking creatures. looking at the picture i'd say it was approx 15mm such a shame for such a brilliantly coloured beastie to live underground. Found in Verwood Dorset, quite sandy soil, any ideas on ID? apologies for the pic quality, taken with my phone.

This is the leaf beetle - Chrysolina bankii. The larvae feed on their host plant (various labiates amongst other things) and pupate in the soil. The adults hand around in the soil for a while before they emerge to continue the cycle.
