| | | Lacewing, Dungfly, and Cranefly for ID A few from this morning, any ID help would be appreciated.
Craneflies mating. Unfortunately they were down in the grass and flew off after this shot.
Scathophaga stercoraria - Common yellow dungfly? I managed to get a few different angles:
Lacewing
Thanks

| | | Re: Lacewing, Dungfly, and Cranefly for ID Well you appear to have 3 of the difficult to identify species there. Perhaps that is causing a bit of reluctance for anybody to jump in with ID suggestions.
So let's start things off with a few guesses and hope someone more experienced will join in later.
The craneflies look like Tipula paludosa to me. But this family is a bit of a minefield for the inexperienced - like me!
The same goes for the Dung Fly. It looks like Scathophaga stercoraria (the commonest species) but it really requires an expert here.
The lacewing is confusing me. I am tempted to say Chrysopa perla but there doesn't appear to be enough black markings on the head. Although I am struggling to turn myself upside down for a decent look!
But there is too much black on the thorax for the alternatives like Chrysopa commata.
Possibly a better view of the head might help. Also a clearer photo of the wing veins may allow the ID keys to work better; I have jumped several steps here.
The main thing to remember though, is that I am not any sort of expert here; I'm just reading from the book and stalling for time until some more knowledgeable people arrive! |

| | | Re: Lacewing, Dungfly, and Cranefly for ID Cranefly not T.paludosa due to wing lunules and stripes on body. Metlallic eye colour might suggest Tipula vernalis

| | | Re: Lacewing, Dungfly, and Cranefly for ID Thanks for the help so far Geoff. Unfortunately the lacewing flew off before I could get any shots at other angles.
Here are some crops of the wing and head, though they might not help much:
Looking at other's photos of Chrysopa perla, they do look very similar.
Cheers

| | | Re: Lacewing, Dungfly, and Cranefly for ID That still makes me think about C. perla with reduced black markings on top of it's head. The second antennal segments are black and the thick longitudinal wing vein is greenish (not black) while the small cross veins are dark.
All of which points to C. perla. But I'm still not convinced so I would like an expert second opinion. |
