| | | "Stung" by a Nomada? After noticing some Nomada flying around old tree stumps, I went over to have a closer look suspecting that there would be some solitary bees nesting there! It was sunny but still quite cool up here in Edinburgh and I noticed that the Nomadas were fairly slow moving. Not having anything suitable to capture them in I decided to try catching them by hand for closer inspection. I managed to catch a couple (which I handled fairly roughly) without incident. On catching a third specimen I felt a sharp pain in my finger. This gave me a bit of a start and was sufficient for me to let go my grip. On reflection it was rather a puny effort which only left a very slight tingle and that only lasted a couple of minutes. It certainly wasn't painful enough to put me off handling one in the future! The point of my story (no pun intended) is that I'm surprised that cuckoo species should possess a sting in the first place. Also, why didn't the other two captures sting? If indeed they do possess a stinger, is it connected to a poison gland? I do recall instances of handling female Yellow Ophion which were attracted in from the night by my house lights. On handling these, they seemed to try and "sting" me with their ovipositor. This action (when successful) succeeded in inflicting a sensation that fell well short of painful but was felt none the less! Is my experience with the Nomada similar one? | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
