| |  red legged flying bug ?
Hi today I was sitting on my bench in the garden and a weird insect which I have never seen before was on the back, I took a photo .I can only describe it as a large flying ant with bright red long legs not a freindly looking thing could anyone out there give this beasty a name. Thanks Gilly

This looks like a Horntail, or wood wasp. The ovipositor at the tail end is for laying eggs in holes bored in wood. They do look a bit scary. Do you live near a wooded area?

Evening Gillian, and welcome to WAB!
I agree - an Ichneumon Wasp. Now, I'm pretty tempted to say Pimpilinae sub-family ( scientific classification), but may not go that far. For one of these though, it does seem to have a more unique appearance.
