| | | Black flying insects Last week in Kent I came across swarms of flying insects. They were black, possibly flying as mating pairs. The shape was very distinctive with a tail/abdomen (or something) appearing to hang vertically downwards. Although their flight seemed laboured, I couldn't focus on one to get a better description, sorry. They were at the edge of a wood in the sun.
It's a long shot, but can anyone suggest what they are. I think they are common, I just don't get them at home.

| | | Re: Black flying insects Sounds like St Mark's Flies to me, I have them up at my local patch now too and they are pretty freaky when flying right at head level with you. St Mark's fly - Bibio marci - Natural England
